St. George’s Castle: discover the hidden viewpoint
Jan. 16 2024
The Miradouro do Recolhimento is an unmissable spot just a two-minute walk from St. George’s Castle.
It was inaugurated in April 2017 and is the result of an intervention by the Santa Maria Maior Parish Council to upgrade the Recolhimento Garden, in the historic area of the Castle. The Recolhimento Children’s and Leisure Park has a superb view over the Tagus River, encompassing one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the city: the Miradouro do Recolhimento. There are a total of 500 square metres, 265 of which are landscaped, with children’s play, fitness and leisure equipment. The stunning viewpoint stands out for its position facing the river, over Alfama and with the Monastery of São Vicente and the National Pantheon (Church of Santa Engrácia) in the foreground: truly a sight not to be missed.
Step by step
To get there, head towards St. George’s Castle, going up Rua de Santa Cruz do Castelo, and, before the ticket offices, choose Rua do Recolhimento. Once there, turn left next to the “Caminho da Ronda” restaurant to follow Beco do Forno do Castelo. Passing through Beco and Rua do Recolhimento, you will reach your destination in less than two minutes. Bear in mind the opening hours: it’s open until 7pm in summer and until 5.30pm in winter. If you’re staying at Solar do Castelo, you’ll be there in no time.
What to expect
The most striking feature is, of course, the panoramic view from what is considered one of the city’s most beautiful belvederes, with the Tagus River as a backdrop.
To record this view, there is a diamond-shaped installation, which invites you not only to pose for photos but also to rest in contemplation.
If you want to extend these moments, you can take advantage of the books in the reading booth set up in the garden, precisely to extend your stay in this city contemplation point.
But there’s more: a playground with two slides and other equipment that allows children to have fun while enjoying the panoramic view over the city.
The viewpoint also has shaded areas with garden tables and benches, as well as fitness equipment, which add to the other structures to provide recreational moments in contact with nature.
In short, if you’re passing through the Castle area or even enjoying a few days of relax in this must-visit historic site in the Portuguese capital, take the opportunity to discover the Miradouro do Recolhimento. As its name suggests, this place invites you to relax and socialise. Here you can take unique photographs, with a panoramic view of the city and Lisbon’s characteristic and special light. The refurbishment of this space has made it even more inviting – we guarantee you won’t regret it.
